Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner fired Agriculture Secretary Javier de Urquiza a week after suffering a defeat on a farm export tax bill in congress, Clarin reported.
The government will likely name Carlos Cheppi, the head of the National Agricultural Technology Institute, or INTA, to replace de Urquiza, Clarin said, citing government officials that it didn't name.
The change comes after Fernandez on July 18 revoked a decree that increased grain export taxes after she failed to win support for the move in the Senate a day earlier. The export tax decree, announced in March, sparked widespread protests from farmers who said the measure erased their profit margins.
Cheppi is a long-time ally of Fernandez's husband, former president Nestor Kirchner, and helped the government provide farm machinery and technical advice to Venezuela, Clarin reported.
